SME Fund 2026

SME Fund 2026
Your brand, logo, business name, or design can be protected for up to 75% less. The SME Fund launches in February 2026—an EU programme that allows businesses to recover a significant portion of the costs associated with protecting their intellectual property. If you run a business, create content online, or are building a brand, this could give you a real competitive advantage in 2026. Find out how the SME Fund works and how to prepare before the funding runs out.

What is the SME Fund 2026 and who administers it?

The SME Fund—also known as the "Ideas Powered for Business SME Fund"—is a European Commission grant scheme implemented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Its primary objective is to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in financing intellectual property protection activities by reimbursing a portion of the costs incurred for related services, such as trademark and design applications or intellectual property portfolio assessments.

The new edition of the programme is scheduled for 2026, with applications opening on 2 February 2026. This means that businesses should start planning their application strategy now to make the most of the available funding.

Scope and Funding Mechanism

The Fund provides financial support in the form of vouchers that can be used for various intellectual property-related activities. In 2026, the vouchers generally cover four main areas:

IP Scan – an analysis and assessment of a company’s intellectual property portfolio.
→ reimbursement of up to 90% of eligible costs, up to a maximum of approximately EUR 1,080.

Trademarks and designs – reimbursement of official application fees.
→ typically 75% of the costs, up to a maximum of EUR 700.

Inventions and patents – support for patent-related activities.

Plant varieties – grants for the protection of new plant varieties.

The process works as follows: first, the business applies for a voucher. Once the voucher has been granted, the business uses the relevant service (e.g. files a trademark application) and then applies for partial reimbursement of the costs, paid directly into the company’s bank account.

Who is eligible for the SME Fund 2026?

The Fund is available to businesses registered in the European Union that meet the criteria for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), meaning that they employ fewer than 250 people and fall within the EU limits for annual turnover and balance sheet total.

Careful preparation for the application process is essential. This should cover both formal requirements, such as the SME definition and the required documentation, and the company’s intellectual property protection strategy. It is also important to bear in mind that competition can be high, as funding is often awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
